Cyclist charged with attempted murder after encounter with cop

A late-night encounter between a man on a bicycle and a Cottage Grove police officer on Wednesday, Jan. 16 led to wounds for both and a slew of charges for the bicyclist, police said last week.

According to police, at about 1:33 a.m. Wednesday, an officer with CGPD contacted Ronald Dale Obannon, Jr., 24, who was riding his bicycle on River Road. Officer Scott Shepherd said the officer at the scene (who Shepherd declined to identify, citing the trauma the incident has caused for the officer and his family) stopped Obannon for not having a reflector on the back of his bicycle.

Obannon already had a warrant out for his arrest for an alleged domestic assault that occurred in the presence of children, Shepherd said, adding that Obannon became uncooperative during the Wednesday stop and a struggle ensued with the officer.
