Grovers get out the vote

Posted: Monday, Dec 31st, 2012

The furor of a national election gained as November approached. In Cottage Grove, a bevy of candidates filed for city office, with many waiting until the last possible moment to do so. City Council veterans Tom Munroe, Mike Fleck and Diane Conrad each vied to succeed Mayor Gary Williams, who did not seek reelection after six two-year terms in office. City Council incumbents Heather Murphy and Jeff Gowing sought to retain their seats, with Murphy as part of a four-way race for the Councilís at-large seat.

In an election notable for a low local voter turnout and a high number of under votes (voters who did not support any candidate for a particular office), close races were the norm, and some candidates who were elected to office waited until much later to have their victories confirmed. In the end, Gowing won by a margin of 77 votes over Rob Scoggin; Munroe claimed the mayorís seat by a 122-vote margin; Murphy also claimed a close victory and newcomer Kate Coy won the appointment to the Councilís Ward 4 seat by a comfortable total.
