This holiday season will be the last in Cottage Grove for one downtown business owner.
Mary Koepfle, owner of Farmhand Feed and Home Company at 106 South Sixth St., said she’ll close shop right before Christmas this year after a 12-year run. Koepfle cited competition from Walmart and a deteriorating neighborhood around her home as part of her decision to leave.
“They’re trying to run me out, but I’ll make it easy for them,” Koepfle said of the Arkansas-based retail giant. “They find the most successful businesses in town and aim at them, and they’re able to do it because they can sell things cheaper and take a loss.”
Koepfle, who strongly vocalized her stance against Walmart’s attempts to expand its Cottage Grove location in 2007, said the store began placing cracked corn for sale at the front of the building around the time of those proceedings, which she said directly competed with her business.
