City Councilor Jeff Gowing began getting congratulatory phone calls shortly after the polls closed on Election Day.
“My daughters called to congratulate me, and I said, ‘Wait a minute here, I’m only up by 11 votes,’” Gowing said. “I’m not going to be cracking the champagne just yet.”
Soon, Gowing would learn that he had indeed retained his seat representing Ward II in Cottage Grove after besting challenger Rob Scoggin by 66 votes. Other candidates also learned the election’s outcome at a late hour (and some not until the next day) in a local contest that was perhaps as notable for the number of under votes (voters not supporting any candidate in a race) as for the close outcomes it produced.For the complete article see the 11-14-2012 issue.
