A business that began over 40 years ago with one building, a loader and dumptruck continues today as one of Cottage Grove’s premier suppliers of building and landscaping materials, and through the ups and downs of an uncertain economy, Boyce and Sons has unfailingly utilized a family formula for success.

In 1969, Bill Boyce purchased the equipment and land of a failing sawdust business that was located on the hillside above Boyce and Sons’ current location at 79149 North River Road. The business supplied much of the sawdust that was used to heat homes in Cottage Grove in those days, but Bill’s son, Rick Boyce, decided to expand its offerings to include hardware and lumber.

“It just kept getting bigger,” Rick Boyce said of the business, pointing toward an ever-expanding lot to prove it. Today, Boyce and Sons runs on the hard work of Rick and younger brother Darin Boyce, in addition to Rick’s daughter, Heather, and two long-term employees who aren’t technically family (but might as well be.)
