Local community, business and government leaders converged on the Village Green Monday for the annual economic development summit organized by the Cottage Grove Community Development Corporation.

Attendees heard a light, entertaining and informative speech from the event’s keynote speaker, Maury Foreman, a senior manager with the Washington State Department of Commerce who specializes in creating healthy downtowns and recruiting businesses and workers to small communities.

“The last few years have not been kind to business, with businesses closing, relocating and revenue dropping,” Foreman said. “But when you look at the opportunities and the successes that have occurred in this community recently, you see that economic development is right around the corner.”

Foreman listed local successes such as the retention and expansion of Wal-Mart, the building of the Cottage Grove Industrial Park, demolition of the Gates Meat School, the Gateway Arch installation and others.

Foreman said economic development is a new field of study that often wrongly focuses on job creation.
